bishopadkinsOur pastor, Bishop J. Berry Adkins, was born on April 6, 1948.  He grew up in a devout Christian home.  In his household, attending church was mandatory.

He attended Boice Elementary School, Kensington High School, Scotchburg University, and Person-Manigold Theological Seminary.  He has a Doctorate of Theology from Person-Manigold Theological Seminary.

At the age of 20, Bishop Adkins heard the call to the ministry.  He was ordained at the age of 22. He preached for three years as an associate minister at his home church.

Bishop J. Berry AdkinsWhile attending a revival at a pentecostal church with a friend of his, Bishop Adkins received the Holy Ghost.  This was a new experience for our pastor.  When he returned to his home church, he felt out of place because he was not being taught about the Holy Ghost. He left his home church and began going to a pentecostal church.

smallsisadkinsHe met and married his wife, the former Darlene Mills. They were married on February 10th in 1973.

During this time, Eld. Adkins had some very innovative ideas about how the church should minister to the body of Christ.  He believed that the church should minister to every aspect of the body Sis. Darlene

When he approached his pastor with his ideas, the then Eld. Adkins was met with opposition. Eld. Adkins felt the leading of the Lord to start his own church.  Eld. Adkins prayed and fasted about it for 6 months.

In 1977, Eld. Adkins began the Greater Buelahland Interdenominational House of Rest. He named he church Greater Buelahland Interdenominational House of Rest (GBIDHOR) because he wanted the church first to be a place of peace and rest.  Secondly, he wanted the church to be a place where people of all denominations and races could feel welcomed to serve the Lord.

Eld. Adkins was consecrated as a bishop in 1990.
