On the last Sunday of March, 1997, Don Greely, minister, his family and two others met in a recreation hall on Davis Street for worship. They called this new church "Zion Christian Church." By April of 1999, the church had grown to a point where they relocated to Hawkins Road and became known as the Greater New Zion Christian Church. From a church of five, to more than 200 individuals regularly worshipping together, it is clear that God is not through with the church yet! The tiny seed, planted in 1997, is growing "the planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified". Dr. Greely's dream is to see a vital church, growing and maturing from its humble beginnings into a place where God and His Word were honored. The new dream for the new century is really not that much different - to see more and more people changed through Christ's love. We joined the Greater Buelahland Fellowship in 1998. Our message is that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. He alone is Savior and Lord. We accept both the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God. Christian faith demands the best our minds can give, so we are a studying church, seeking to apply Biblical truth intelligently. Because of that, we try to imitate New Testament precedents. That is why our Communion is every Lord's Day, our leaders are called elders and deacons, our preaching is about Christ, and our prayers are in Jesus' name. Even our name is rooted in the earliest days of the church, when the disciples were first called "Christians." Commitment to weekly celebrative worship of God is a privilege of the Christian life. Our members gather regularly in smaller groups--adult Bible study--for fellowship, care and Bible application. We believe that every Christian is gifted of God for some kind of ministry; we encourage our members to find an area of service. Our church consists of hundreds of "ministers," who faithfully serve the church and our community each week through our many ministries. We want to grow because we are under Christ's commission to disciple the world. |
