2nd Line Ministries is a youth ministry for children ages 11-19. It began in 1985. Bervin's son Alvin Linieo and many of his friends were always hanging around the Linieo house. Bervin began taking them on outings, to sporting events, and to church. He also began tutoring the young men, checking on their school progress, and attending their sporting events. Word spread around the church that the Linieos attended and many of the teenagers wanted to hang out with Bervin. Bervin, dubbed "Bro. B" by many of the youth, felt lead to start a ministry geared towards youth. The ministry was named 2nd Line Ministries because Bervin said that the youth were the second in line after the adults in the order of things. 2nd Line began with a small staff, Bervin Linieo, his aunt Cushi Jones, and his son Alvin. The ministry had over 50 active participants by its 2nd month of existence. Bervin had his entire staff, 3 people, fast and pray for 7 days straight. At the end of the seventh day, two more people joined the staff. Each time 2nd Line needed new staff members; Bervin called a fast and the Lord would increase the staff. There are now 20 staff members serving 300 plus participants. The 20 staff members do not include tutors, camp workers, and assistant coaches. 2nd Line began out of Bervin's house. Soon, a bigger place was needed. In 1986, 2nd Line rented an office in the building where the ministry is now located. In 1989, 2nd Line rented a second office in the building. The ministry joined the Greater Buelahland Fellowship in 1989. The owner of the building, James A. Sanders, died in 1993. Mr. Sanders will the building to 2nd Line Ministries and a substantial amount of money. Also, Mr. Sanders' family donates money each year towards a scholarship that bears his name. The James A. Sanders building houses 2nd Line Ministries, the 2nd Line Learning Center, and the James A. Sanders Gymnasium. The Lord is blessing 2nd Line Ministries to help many young people and to lead them to Christ. |
